Grandparents' Guide to Modern Baby Gear and Safety

What's changed since you had kids (a lot).

Baby care has changed significantly. Here's what grandparents need to know.

Sleep Safety Changes

  • Babies sleep on their backs ("Back to Sleep")
  • No blankets, pillows, or bumpers in crib
  • No co-sleeping on couches or soft surfaces
  • Room-sharing (not bed-sharing) recommended for first 6-12 months

Car Seat Changes

  • Rear-facing until at least age 2 (preferably longer)
  • Car seats expire (check the date)
  • No puffy coats under straps

Feeding Changes

  • No cereal in bottles
  • Solids start at 6 months (not 4)
  • Honey not safe until age 1
  • Allergen introduction has changed (earlier is better)
Be open: Guidelines change based on research. What was safe in 1990 may not be safe now.
