Newborn Care 101: The First Week at Home

What to expect and how to care for your new baby.

The first week home is overwhelming. Here are the basics.

Feeding

Feed every 2-3 hours (8-12 times/day). Watch for hunger cues: rooting, lip smacking, hands to mouth. Crying is a late hunger sign.

Sleep

Newborns sleep 16-17 hours/day in short bursts. Always on their back, alone, in a crib/bassinet.

Diapering

8-12 wet diapers/day is normal. Expect meconium (black tar-like poop) first, then yellow seedy stools if breastfed.

Umbilical Cord Care

Keep dry, fold diaper below it, it falls off in 1-3 weeks. Sponge baths only until it falls off.

When to Call the Doctor

Fever over 100.4°F, not eating, fewer than 6 wet diapers/day, excessive sleepiness, yellow skin/eyes.
