Safe sleep saves lives. Here are the current AAP recommendations.
The ABCs of Safe Sleep
Alone: No blankets, pillows, toys, or bumpers in the crib.
Back: Always place baby on their back to sleep.
Crib: Firm, flat surface in a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or play yard.
Additional Guidelines
- Room-share (not bed-share) for at least 6 months
- No smoking around baby
- Breastfeeding reduces SIDS risk
- Offer pacifier at sleep time (once breastfeeding is established)
- Avoid overheating (dress baby like you dress yourself)
What About...
- Swaddles: Safe until baby can roll (usually 2-4 months)
- Sleep positioners: Not recommended (suffocation risk)
- Inclined sleepers: Recalled. Do not use.
