Teething: Signs, Symptoms, and Relief

How to help your baby through the teething phase.

Teething can be rough. Here's how to recognize it and help.

Signs of Teething

  • Drooling (so much drooling)
  • Gnawing/chewing on everything
  • Fussiness
  • Swollen gums
  • Sleep disruption
  • Ear pulling (referred pain)

What Doesn't Cause Teething

High fever, diarrhea, severe diaper rash. If baby has these, it's likely illness, not teeth.

Relief Options

  • Chilled (not frozen) teething toys
  • Cold washcloth to chew
  • Gum massage with clean finger
  • Infant Tylenol or Motrin (after 6 months, ask pediatrician)

What to Avoid

Teething tablets, benzocaine gels (FDA warnings), amber teething necklaces (choking/strangulation risk).
